Curcumin From Turmeric Has Cognitive Benefits

Shanthos Thirunavukkarasu

A recent study done by Gary W. Small and colleagues show that daily consumption of Theracurmin (bioavailable form of curcumin) improves memory and attention in adults. In this experiment, forty participants (adults aged 51- 84 years old) were recruited and randomly placed in one of two groups: the control group (received the placebo) and the group of individuals that received Theracurmin. Subjects were required to orally consume Theracurmin twice a day for 18 months; at the end of the 18 months, a PET scan was used to observe any changes in the participant’s brain.

Overall, results from this study show that consuming Theracurmin daily has cognitive benefits. It decreases amyloid and tau binding in the amygdala and hypothalamus, which as a result improves memory. Researchers suggest that Theracurmin could be used as an inexpensive form of treatment to improve memory-loss, decrease neurodegeneration and ultimately treat symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

University of Toronto Scarborough Land Acknowledgement

For over 15,000 years Toronto has been a gathering site for humans. This sacred land is the territory of the Huron-Wendat and Petun First Nations, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit River. The territory was the subject of the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, a coming together of the Iroquois and Ojibwe Confederacies and other allied nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. Today, Toronto is still a meeting place for Indigenous people from across Turtle Island, and immigrants, both new and old, from across the world. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work in the community, and on this territory
